Candy Apple M&M’s Cupcakes

‘Tis the season for all things apple!  Apple cider, applesauce, apple pie, caramel apples, apple dumplings, and…are you ready for this…Candy AppleM&M’s!  When I saw these in the seasonal aisle at my local Walmart {along with Candy Corn M&M’s!} I thought they’d be perfect for using in a festive fall dessert.

I picked up my M&M’s, along with some Mott’s 100% Apple Juice and Mott’s Original Applesauce, and headed home to start baking a sweet surprise for the rest of the Artsy Family.

Ingredients:
– 1 box cake mix {I used yellow, but you could also try chocolate!}
– 1 can of your favorite frosting
– 1 bag Candy Apple M&M’s
– 1 jar Mott’s Original Applesauce
– Cupcake Liners

Optional:
– Decorating tip and bag
– Gold Sprinkles
– Red Coloring Spray

Bake cupcakes according to directions on the box, substituting applesauce for the oil.  This will make your cupcakes more moist as well as healthier.  Once they’re cooled, use a sharp knife to cut a section from the top and center of each cupcake.  Think of it like carving a pumpkin, leaving the outer edge of the top in tact and removing a cone shaped piece, as shown.  Make sure you don’t cut all the way through to the bottom.

Fill the hole with Candy Apple M&M’s!  Replace the top of the cupcake {you’ll need to cut off the bottom of the piece you removed so that it fits…guess you’ll have to eat it!}

Now you’re ready to decorate!  I filled my decorating bag with white frosting and swirled it on the top of each cupcake.  Then, I sprayed red coloring on top and added a few gold sprinkles to match the gold cupcake liners I used.

It’s super simple to do, and what a fun surprise!  They just look like a normal, festive cupcake, but on the inside…M&M’s!  All that’s left is to serve them with a glass of Mott’s Apple Juice.
